He has also served the McDonough Church of Christ previously as a deacon. He was one of the first graduates of the McDonough Bible College, which is now known as the World Bible Institute. He and his wife, Selina, currently reside in Barnesville, Georgia.

Our History

The McDonough Church of Christ began as the result of the need for a congregation of the Lord’s people in the McDonough area. Several dedicated Christians made the decision to begin meeting and working in the area to try and bring Christ to those living close to them.

In early October of 1985, the first meeting of the McDonough Church of Christ was held in the Spratlin Building on Covington St. From there, they moved into the theatre building on the “square” in McDonough. By this time, the attendance was up from just a handful of members to around 30.

October of 1986 saw the congregation moving into the American Legion Building. This facility served the needs of the growing congregation better as there were separate rooms for classes and central heat and air conditioning.

After the purchase of a building by Greater Atlanta Christian Schools for a “south-side” campus called Meadowcreek, the church met on July 10, 1988 in the library of the school. Greg Smith and his family moved to the area in 1988 to work with the school at Meadowcreek and Greg started preaching part-time for the church. The gymnasium of the school was used for a short time due to the continuing growth of the congregation.

The church at McDonough was starting to realize its goal of moving into its permanent building. The first major purchase of the congregation was that of a building at the corner of Lake Dow Rd. and Wellington Dr. in the summer of 1993. The congregation continued to grow to the point of selecting three men to serve as elders on October 31, 1994. They were Ken Golson, Milton Kidd, and Howard Wallace. Other elders were added over the next few years including Wayne Brown, Buddy Cary, and Clarence Bennett.

The first full-time minister, Eddie Boggess, was hired in 1997 and a house next door to the church property was purchased to serve as a home for the preacher. In 2000, ground was broken on a new building with an auditorium to seat 400, classroom space, and fellowship hall. The building was completed and the congregation started worshipping in the new facility in December 2001. The congregation has continued to experience growth over the years. Other ministers have included Charles Thompson, Jeff Wilder, and currently, J.J. Turner. A Bible College (World Bible Institute) began in 2005. We have elders who currently oversee the McDonough family: JJ Turner, Fred McClure, and Bob McKee.

The Lake Dow location was sold in 2023 and The McDonough Church of Christ is currently residing in its temporary location at Building 140 located on John Frank Ward Boulevard.
